Kate Arpin

B.Sc. student

I have been involved in the Metaxas lab as both a summer student and part-time employee throughout my undergraduate degree.  I’ve spent most of my time assisting Sarah de Mendonça (M.Sc. candidate) with video and image analysis examining deep sea benthic megafauna in the North Atlantic Ocean (January 2018-present). Most recently, I have participated on a NOAA research cruise in the North Atlantic to investigate the presence and distribution of deep sea corals by ROV deployment (ROPOS), for which I was responsible for managing the logged data and assisting with sample processing (June 2019). I have also been involved in fieldwork for Arieanna Balbar (M.Sc. candidate) and Conrad Pratt (M.Sc. candidate) for their coastal ecology research on kelp in the Eastern Shore Islands, NS (2018-present). This summer I will be running a project with the Nancy Witherspoon Memorial Summer Research Award to examine the presence of fauna in kelp beds in the Eastern Shore Islands, supporting the research conducted by Arieanna Balbar and Conrad Pratt.
